Earth Hour 2009 A Success, 4.9 % Reduction in Provincial Load

EDMONTON , Alberta - One of Canada 's leading companies for data analysis and forecasting of energy, Solution 105 Consulting Ltd., has reviewed the provincial load figures and has determined that Albertans reduced their electricity usage by 4.9% during Earth Hour 2009.  "Albertans have responded and created significant savings," said Chris Vilcsak, president of Solution 105.  "Our detailed calculations and statistical analysis shows that Albertans saved 400 MWh of energy during Earth Hour in 2009."

"Perhaps more significant" said Vilcsak " was that the reduction actually began much earlier in the day.  Although Earth Hour was officially scheduled for 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM local time, an energy reduction was seen throughout the daylight hours.  The savings averaged 2.7% from 6 AM until 5 PM, and from 5 PM to 10 PM the effect was even greater, with savings of 4.5%.  Total energy savings throughout the day (6 AM to 10 PM) were 4150 MWh, enough energy to power 560 homes for a year."

Earth Hour 2009 was more effective than in 2008, with nearly 2 ½ times as much energy being saved.  And, the effect started in  early afternoon rather than running throughout the entire day.  "This suggests that the media's message is getting across. and that people can have an effect on their energy use," said Vilcsak
